A Neighborhood in Need

Sister Vera Butler’s Story

Our organization began its relationship with Southern Homes in 2002. sister-vera-3
We had assembled a non-profit corporation called Tulane/Canal
Neighborhood Development Corporation. Our neighborhood was
getting bad and our 12-member board (mostly neighbors) identified
that homeownership, getting families settling in our community, was
the only thing that would save it. With only an 18% homeownership
rate we needed good affordable homes to be built in our community.

After talking to Southern Homes I found their products and services to
be good and saw that they built quality homes at reasonable prices.
Since we help predominantly low income families and first time home
buyers, affordability and quality were our biggest concerns. Our
project was a big undertaking. We really appreciated Chris Korman
and Don Raider for working with us through everything. They were
constantly in communication through emails and phone calls to keep
us updated on progress. That was really helpful with this type of
community project.

Southern Homes was able to keep everything in budget and they
finished ahead of schedule. When I saw the first house I thought “I
would not mind moving in here myself”. Everything looked nice and
well done and was move-in ready. The inspection reports all came
back excellent so we were all very pleased.

We have built 3 homes with this company and are finishing another 4
now. Some of our potential homebuyers have run into some issues
getting a mortgage with the credit crunch going on so we have some
unoccupied homes currently. Southern Homes came out and did
minor touch ups to keep the homes looking new. And not only that,
they agreed to honor the warranty once the homes are occupied.

I have been pleased with Southern Homes and would highly
recommend them. I have worked with a smaller builder before but
they did not have access to all the resources that Southern Homes has
available. You can just sit down with them and talk to them about your
needs and they will give you a good price and put exactly what you
want in the house. It has been very good working with them.
